Running Is More Than Exercise — 5 Best Running Spots in Korea

Mar 20, 2026

Have you ever warmed up, taken that first slow step, and kept going until your lungs were burning?

All you need is a pair of shoes and the desire to move. And yet, this simple act can change how you feel, think, and live.

Running strengthens the heart, helps lower blood pressure, and delivers a range of physical health benefits. The mental benefits are just as real. The hormones released during a run directly reduce stress and anxiety, and lift your mood. A study found that it can be as effective as medication in alleviating symptoms of depression.

Running today is no longer just about pace and personal records. It's about chasing experiences, not times — and finding people to chase them with.

Today, we explore the many dimensions of running — and five spots in Korea to experience it.

Beyond the Clock — Running as Experience

Korea has a running trend right now: the "Butter Run."

You put a zip-lock bag of heavy cream in your backpack, run 10km to a bakery of your choice, and by the time you arrive — the cream has turned into homemade butter.

If running used to be about tracking times on the Nike app and pushing for a personal best, running in Korea today has evolved into something broader.

It's not just about the clock — it's about meaningful experience.

Together, We Can

Running crews are booming worldwide. You can run alone just fine — but why do so many people prefer to run together?

Because something shifts when you run with others — the conversations, the shared pace, the moment you push past your limit together.

Research shows that exercising with others leads to greater consistency and has a measurably positive effect on mental health — which makes sense, given that humans are deeply social creatures.

5 Running Spots in Korea

Korea offers a remarkably diverse range of running environments — from riverside paths in the heart of the city to coastal roads, mountain trails, and even a warm-weather track you can run in the dead of winter.

Here are five spots worth exploring at your own pace.

1. Han River, Seoul — Running Along Korea's Most Iconic Waterway

The Han River, cutting straight through the heart of Seoul, is the most familiar ground for Korean runners. Well-maintained flat tracks, wide open river views, and the energy of people running in every season.

Running courses are spread across Han River parks — Yeouido, Banpo, Ttukseom and more. After sunset, the riverside lights up — and a nighttime run along the Han is simply stunning.

Beginners to marathoners — everyone can find their pace here. As Korea's most popular running spot, running crews are everywhere — and joining one is easier than you'd think.

2. Paju Greenhouse Run — Running Warm Through a Korean Winter

Even as temperatures drop below freezing, Korean runners never stop.

In Paju, one of the northern areas of Gyeonggi Province, an indoor running track has been built inside agricultural greenhouse structures — warm, sheltered, and unlike anything you've run in before. Sunlight filters through the plastic sheeting overhead. A one-of-a-kind experience.

3. Busan Coastal Run — Seagulls, Waves and the South Sea

Busan, one of Korea's great port cities, sits along the beautiful coastline of the South Sea. The coastal running route connecting Gwangalli, Haeundae, and Songjeong beaches puts the sound of waves and the cry of seagulls right beside you.

Cool, humid sea air. Sandy beach giving way to paved road. And an early morning run along Busan's coastline that changes how you feel about the rest of the day.

4. Jeju Island — Every Run, a Different Kind of Beautiful

Korea's southernmost island offers what many runners would call a dream route. Vivid blue ocean, Jeju's distinctive stone walls, and wildflowers that change with every season.

The Jeju Olle Running Course consists of 26 routes, each capturing a different side of the island — from flat coastal paths to uphill climbs along the slopes of Halla mountain. Choose based on your level and your mood.

5. Trail Running — For Those Who Want to Go Deeper

For runners who want to fully disconnect from the city, trail running is the answer.

Mountains near Seoul — Bukhansan, Cheonggyesan, Gwanaksan — all have well-maintained trail courses. Trail running demands more — from your muscles and your focus. Uneven terrain, constant elevation changes, and no room to zone out.

And the forest air — rich with phytoncides — does the rest. Body challenged, mind recharged.

Good shoes, comfortable clothes, and the decision to go. That's all you need.

If you're looking for good company and a professional coach to run with — The Pylon Square Running Class is a great place to begin.

At your own pace, on your own course. Start today.
